Welder Qualification and Certification

The qualification of a welder is a process that seeks to establish the aptitude of a person to carry out welding that meets the minimum quality requirements imposed by the code or standard under which they are working.

The welder qualification seeks to examine the welder’s skill or ability to produce sound welds following a previously qualified WPS (welding procedure). The way codes and standards address this goal is by evaluating welds made by the candidate under specific conditions.

The qualification welding must be executed according to a previously qualified WPS. Once completed, the test will be evaluated according to established inspection methods and quality criteria. The result of this exercise is a document in which the variables are recorded. used in the qualification and working conditions under which the welder can develop production welds, the written record of this testing, evaluation and registration process is what is called certification.
